Epilepsy Specialist Nurse

Job Introduction

We are looking for an Epilepsy Specialist Nurse to join our Complex Health Needs Service in Bath and Northeast Somerset as part of our integrated Learning Disability and Autism division.

We are offering a £2000 Welcome Bonus to the successful applicant and the opportunity to develop and specialise your skills and train as a Non-Medical Prescriber and Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) Practitioner.

As an Epilepsy Specialist Nurse, you will be key in delivering Epilepsy reviews and epilepsy training, with some care coordination / Continuing Health Care as well as liaising with hospitals.

You will join a talented multidisciplinary team consisting of other specialist health professionals including specialists in Psychiatry; Psychology; Occupational Therapy; Speech and Language Therapy; Physiotherapy and Behavioural Support Specialists.

Hours are typically 9am-5pm with room for flexibility as well a hybrid working structure. This is a full-time, permanent position based at our Twerton, Bath location but as this is a community role so will require travel around BaNES.

Main Responsibility

As an Epilepsy Specialist Nurse, you will:

  • Support adults with learning disabilities and epilepsy, their families, and social care providers to manage their epilepsy safely in the community.   
  • As a non-medical prescriber, you will take a lead on treatment pathways, offering advice around medication options as well as alternative treatment options.
  • Be expected to liaise with the Neurology department in hospitals and attend Neurology appointments. You will be part of the discussions around treatment, planning and risk management.

This role supports individuals who have a Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) in situ. There is an expectation that you will train to be a VNS practitioner and will be able to deliver this therapy in the community. 

The Ideal Candidate

You will be a qualified Nurse with NMC Registration

  • Around 4 years post qualification experience qualification experience
  • Have a Drivers License and access to a vehicle
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team as well as the ability to work autonomously.
  • Ideally you will be a non-medical prescriber though we can offer training for this.
  • Ideally you will have a background in Learning Disabilities already
