We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Psychiatrist to join our dedicated Mental Health Team at HMP Chelmsford, a Category B local prison and Young Offender Institution for adult males aged 18+, based in Chelmsford.
In this role, you will work collaboratively within a well‑established multidisciplinary team, providing assessment, treatment, and ongoing management for patients with both stable and acute mental health needs. You will play a vital part in delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care within a unique and highly rewarding clinical environment, while also contributing to service development and clinical leadership.

Main Responsibilities
As a Mental Health Psychiatrist, you will deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred care within a secure and supportive prison environment. Based on site at HMP Chelmsford, you’ll carry out comprehensive psychiatric and medical assessments, treating individuals with both stable and acute mental health needs and managing complex cases where mental and physical health intersect.
You’ll take the lead on safe and effective prescribing, contribute to key clinical decisions through MDT discussions, and ensure care is evidence‑based and aligned with NICE guidance. Alongside your clinical work, you’ll play an influential role in service development and clinical leadership, supporting senior clinicians, shaping service direction, and driving continuous improvement.
Collaboration is central to this role. You’ll work closely with a skilled multidisciplinary team, prison staff, and external partners to deliver coordinated, safe, and compassionate care, making a meaningful difference to a vulnerable and often underserved population.

Essential qualifications & experience
- GMC‑registered medical professional
- On the Specialist Register in General Adult Psychiatry or Forensic Psychiatry
- Approved Clinician (AC) status
- Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
- Strong understanding of multi‑disciplinary and multi‑agency working
- Up‑to‑date knowledge in adult psychiatry and personality disorder
- Awareness of current mental health policy, legislation, and service provision
