Job Introduction
As a Children in Care Nurse Advisor, you’ll be working as part of Essex Child and Family Well-Being Service delivering services across North East Essex.
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and committed professional to join the Looked After Children’s Team in the North Essex Quadrant as a Children in Care Nurse Advisor, for 3 days a week (22.5 hours).
This is a rare opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and competencies in this specialist field whilst receiving structured support and training via the Named Nurse for Children in Care.
The primary focus of this role will be to undertake the lead health professional role for complex children in care aged 5-19 years. This will include undertaking statutory health assessments and attendance at children's looked after reviews. You will be responsible for ensuring the health needs of this vulnerable cohort are met.
You will be a qualified registered nurse or children’s nurse and/or Health Visitor/ School Nurse with experience working in the community setting and must be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child development. The post holder will be expected to work under supervision using their own initiative following training. He/she will receive on-going support and supervision via the Named Nurse for Children in Care
You will need an ability to liaise and work in partnership with a wide range of agencies in the statutory, voluntary, and independent sectors to ensure a co-ordinated and holistic approach when undertaking and facilitating statutory review health assessments.
You will be expected to travel across the North East Essex area and therefore a car user is essential.

Main Responsibility
The Children in Care Nurse Advisor will undertake the lead health professional role for CIC who have been identified to have complex health needs. The identified lead health professional will undertake the Review Health Assessment (RHA), implement and regularly monitor the health care plan and contribute to the child’s interagency care plan. The lead health professional should take responsibility for making themselves known to the child and their carers.
The Children in Care Nurse Advisor will: -
- Be an individual practitioner providing co-ordinated care for each looked after child and young person
- Complete statutory review health assessments as requested by the Children in Care Named Nurse or LAC Administrator
- Act as an advocate for the health of each child or young person who is looked after.
- To develop programmes/pathways that support young people in care to make healthy lifestyle choices to reduce risk taking behaviours and optimize their health outcomes.
- Work with the child’s social worker to co-ordinate the health care plan and ensure actions are followed up
- Be responsible for liaising with other professionals known to be providing a service to the child, in order to gather up to date information. This is required to complete a comprehensive and holistic child centred health assessment and care plan
- Act as a key contact for the child’s social worker
- Act as a key contact for children’s residential homes, providing drop ins and support as requested
- Attend children's looked after reviews if invited or ensure up to date health information is available to the Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) and social worker as per consultation requests
- Details of the allocated lead health professional should be recorded under groups and relationships on the child’s electronic record
- Be responsible for the management of any concerns
- Contribute to the delivery of training for health staff and inter agency training.

- You will have a registered Nurse or Children’s nurse (or registered school nurse of health visitor) qualification with experience working in the community.
- You will have a knowledge and understanding of the health needs and complex health issues affecting children in care and you must be able to work effectively with children, young people and adults. Knowledge of trauma informed practice would be desirable.
- You will have excellent communication skills and be able to support children and young people with complex health needs and be able to advocate for them in multidisciplinary forums.
- You will also need to be confident using IT systems and be able to demonstrate working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel.
