Job Introduction

We are on the look out for a Catering assistant to join our Catering department based at St. Martin’s Hospital.

The Catering assistant will undertake a range of duties including providing meals as well as snacks and sandwiches (made in house) for our service users. You will help support the team in meeting the needs of the Catering service and complement the delivery of service user care by our clinical staff.

As a Catering assistant, you will ensure the department meet the required cleaning standards and ensure a HACCP plan is followed in relation to food delivery, preparation, cooking and serving.

The service is in operation all year round and open daily between 08:45am to 18:00pm. This role is 22.5 hours worked across 5 days during the week where weekend work is a required part of the rota. 

Main Responsibility

  • Assist with the preparation of meals ensuring they are available at the prescribed time and of the requested content / grade.
  • Exercise the current portion control, using catering guidelines as defined by the Hotel Services Manager.
  • Follow the department’s cleaning schedule within the catering block, including the changing room to meet the cleaning standards target.
  • Serve Service Users meals at ward level as and when required, dinner on a daily basis ensuring temperatures are taken and are at the correct levels.
  • Wear provided catering PPE / uniform and maintain a clean and tidy appearance at all times with special regard to personal hygiene and comply with quality standards
  • Organise graded meals in line with patient’s menu choices, arranged in preparation for serving and delivery to wards.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential

  • Basic food and hygiene: minimum food safety level 2
  • NVQ level 1 in cleaning
  • Work well as a team but comfortable working alone
  • Ability to follow cleaning schedules and Health and safety instructions

Desirable

  • Understand a range of routine procedures
  • Previous expereince in the catering industry or knowledge of catering procedures including HACCP
