Band 5 Specialist School Nurse - Guildford

Job Introduction

Are you a compassionate and experienced nurse looking for a deeply rewarding role? We are seeking a Band 5 Specialist School Nurse to join our supportive and multidisciplinary team.

The post holder will be responsible for overseeing the provision of healthcare for children and young people aged 2–19 years, with severe, profound, and multiple learning and physical difficulties. 

You’ll play a key role in delivering specialist, holistic care in a unique educational setting, working closely with families, school staff, and healthcare professionals to ensure each child’s needs are met with dignity, empathy, and expertise.

Base

This role is based at Pond Meadow School in Guildford.

Main Responsibility

Communication & Collaboration

Build trusting relationships with children, families, and professionals, using empathy and clarity in all interactions. Support inclusive communication methods and contribute to a connected, supportive team environment.

Clinical Judgement & Safeguarding

Assess and respond to complex health needs with care and professionalism. Safeguard children through vigilant practice and contribute to service improvement through reflection and audit.

Service Planning & Organisation

Coordinate care and staff to ensure responsive, high-quality support. Provide flexible cover across schools and contribute to a seamless nursing service.

Clinical Skills & Procedures

Deliver specialised, hands-on care including emergency response and complex procedures, while ensuring safe, accurate use of clinical equipment.

Patient-Centred Care

Provide holistic, family-focused care tailored to each child’s physical, emotional, and social needs. Work in partnership with families and engage in multi-agency safeguarding support.

Policy & Service Development

Champion evidence-based practice and help shape service improvements through shared learning and collaboration.

Resource & Information Management

Maintain safe use of equipment and accurate, confidential records. Encourage effective use of digital tools to support care delivery.

Team Support & Development

Support the growth of others through training, mentoring, and supervision. Help create a positive, learning-focused team culture.

Autonomy & Professional Responsibility

Work independently with sound clinical judgement. Stay accountable for high standards of care and promote a safe, respectful environment for all.

The Ideal Candidate

We’d love to hear from you if:

Essential

  • RGN and or RSCN with child and/or learning disability experience
  • Experience of working with children with additional needs
  • Good working knowledge of Child Protection policy & procedures
  • Clear understanding of community health services
  • Able to communicate effectively
  • Clear, concise written & oral communication
  • Able to work autonomously & prioritise own work effectively

Desirable

  • School nurse degree, diploma
  • Experience of working with children with complex health needs
  • Previous working experience in a special school setting
  • Experience of initiating & participating in clinical audits

Other requirements: Full UK Driving Licence with a car insured for business use.
